Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays: the sunnah rhythm of the week

4 min read

If the White Days are the monthly rhythm of sunnah fasting, Mondays and Thursdays are its weekly heartbeat. Week in, week out, the Prophet ﷺ chose these two days — and he told us why.

“The deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, and I like that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.”

— Sunan al-Tirmidhi 747

A beautiful thought to fast with

Twice a week, our deeds go up for presentation. The Prophet ﷺ wanted to meet that moment fasting — hungry for Allah’s sake at the very hour his record was being raised. When you fast a Monday or Thursday, you are stepping into that same intention, and there is something quietly transformative about it: the day stops being an ordinary workday and becomes an appointment.

Building the habit without burning out

  • Start with one day a week — many people find Thursday easiest, with the weekend ahead.
  • Decide the night before. The intention is just that decision; nothing needs to be spoken.
  • Eat suhoor, even a small one. The Prophet ﷺ taught that there is blessing in it, and your 3 PM self will thank your 5 AM self.
  • If a Monday or Thursday coincides with a White Day, one fast carries both intentions — the occasions overlap, and so, Insha Allah, do the rewards.
  • Consistency beats intensity. A single day kept every week for a year outweighs a heroic fortnight abandoned by February.

On that last point, the Prophet ﷺ said something worth pinning above every habit we try to build:

“Narrated `Aisha: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little."”

Let the reminder do the remembering

The hardest part of Monday–Thursday fasting is not the hunger — it is remembering on Sunday and Wednesday evening. That is exactly the gap sunnahfast fills: a warm email or notification around 7 PM the night before, so all you have to do is decide yes.

Never miss one of these days again, Insha Allah

A warm reminder the evening before every recommended fast — email or notification, 7 PM your local time. Free forever, Insha Allah.
