The six days of Shawwal: how Ramadan becomes a whole year

4 min read

Eid al-Fitr ends Ramadan, but it does not have to end Ramadanโ€™s momentum. The month that follows, Shawwal, carries an offer:

โ€œWhoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime.โ€

โ€” Sahih Muslim 1164

The arithmetic of "a lifetime"

Scholars unpack it with the tenfold principle from the Quran (6:160): Ramadanโ€™s month of fasting, multiplied by ten, is worth ten months. Six more days, multiplied by ten, is two months. Ten plus two โ€” a complete year. Fast Ramadan and the six of Shawwal every year, and in the ledger of reward you have never stopped fasting at all.

The rules are gentler than you think

  • Any six days of Shawwal count, from the 2nd of the month onward (the 1st is Eid, when fasting is forbidden).
  • They do not need to be consecutive โ€” two here, one there, all six in the last week: all valid.
  • Pairing them with days you might fast anyway, like Mondays, Thursdays or the White Days, makes them lighter, and the occasions overlap in reward, Insha Allah.
  • Missed Ramadan days owed? Most scholars advise making those up first โ€” talk to someone of knowledge you trust about your own case.

The real enemy is the calendar

Almost nobody fails the six of Shawwal from lack of will. They fail it because Shawwal quietly runs out while the Eid leftovers are still in the fridge. A single reminder at the start of the month โ€” which is exactly what sunnahfast sends โ€” is usually all it takes to get the six days planned and done.

Never miss one of these days again, Insha Allah

A warm reminder the evening before every recommended fast โ€” email or notification, 7 PM your local time. Free forever, Insha Allah.
